📦 Installation

1. Install FFmpeg

FFmpeg is required for audio processing. Install it using PowerShell:

winget install ffmpeg

2. Install davinci-rest backend

Install the HTTP REST server to communicate with DaVinci Resolve:

pip install davinci-rest[all]

3. Download and setup launch script

Download the launch script
Move it to your DaVinci Resolve scripts folder

4. Launch the backend in DaVinci Resolve

Open DaVinci Resolve
Navigate to: Workspace → Scripts → LaunchDavinciRest
Wait a few seconds for startup to complete

5. Open the app

Open ShortFabrik and verify the connection status shows "Online"

⚠️ Browser Permission Required: Some browsers will ask if the webapp is allowed to connect to your local network. This is necessary to communicate with DaVinci Resolve on your computer. Click "Allow" to proceed.

How it works

When you click generate, the following happens automatically:

Videos from Pexels URLs are downloaded to your machine
AI voiceovers are created using your chosen TTS engine
Voiceovers are timestamped with perfect subtitle sync using Whisper
Video clips are added to DaVinci Resolve and automatically cut to match the voiceover timing

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pay for DaVinci Resolve?

No! ShortFabrik works with the free version of DaVinci Resolve. You don't need the Studio (paid) version.

Is my data sent to the cloud?

No, everything runs locally on your machine. Your videos, scripts, and data never leave your computer. The only exception is if you use Pexels videos (which are downloaded from Pexels) or ElevenLabs TTS (which requires their API).

What TTS engines are supported?

ShortFabrik supports ElevenLabs (requires API key) and Microsoft Edge TTS (completely free and local).

Can I edit the video after generating?

Yes! Unlike other tools that export a final rendered video, ShortFabrik creates a fully editable timeline in DaVinci Resolve. You can adjust clips, add effects, change colors, and make any modifications you want.

Does this work on Mac or Linux?

Currently, ShortFabrik only works on Windows. Mac and Linux support may come in future updates.

How accurate are the subtitles?

Subtitles are 100% accurate because they use your exact input text. Whisper stable-ts is only used for precise timing - the words come directly from your captions, not from auto-transcription.
